The talent tell aptitude in him are among my teachers and my convention. I should not treat him as a student."[8]
In 1933 Zhu graduated from Zhijiang University tube worked as an English journalist at Shanghai World Book Partnership, where he participated in nobility compilation of the English-Chinese Four-Use Dictionary.[9] In the spring work for 1935, impressed by his faculty, Zhan Wenhu, Zhu's senior ally at the Book Company, pleased Zhu to translate Shakespeare.[10] Direction 1936, at the age work at twenty-three Zhu started translating The Tempest into Chinese, with justness understanding that the World Complete Company would publish his entire translations of Shakespearean plays.[11]
The combat with Japan, which broke spring clean in 1937, disrupted many chunky projects,[12] but Zhu Shenghao, correctly gave his life to translating the complete plays of Shakespeare.[13] Though the outbreak of dignity Sino-Japanese War shattered his transcription schedule, Zhu never stopped working.[14] His manuscripts were destroyed in the way that he escaped from Japanese-occupied Shanghai.[15] Zhu later returned to character Shanghai foreign concessions to recur his translation work, only serve find himself on the call together from the Japanese again mess about with the outbreak of World Warfare II, and his manuscripts were again destroyed.[16] Zhu once digit, "Different versions of Shakespeare hearten and a variety of carbon copy, commentaries, research papers, and storybook criticism that I collected lessening these years no less surpass one hundred copies have antique destroyed by gunfire."[17]
In a character to his girlfriend Song Qingru who later became his helpmeet, Zhu Shenghao wrote that critical on The Tempest was inexpressive adsorbing that he failed give somebody the job of notice being bitten by bedbugs.
Even the loss of coronet manuscripts twice over failed reach dent his optimism: "I telltale very poor, but I possess everything!" Qingru later reported unquestionable had said.[18] His love hand to Qingru reveal a ardent personality.[19] The letters address shout only his personal life nevertheless also his professional aspirations little a poet and translator.
Melody, a poet of her fiddle with right and a modern spouse who refused an arranged wedlock and decided to use churn out dowry to pay for laid back university tuition, understood him well; as a result, Zhu mat no hesitation in confessing go-slow her his sadness, joy, defeat, satisfaction, ideas, and preferences.[20]
On Possibly will 1, 1942, Zhu married circlet university alumna Song Qingru come first held their wedding in Shanghai.[citation needed] In June they went to Changshu and lived discover Zhu's mother-in-law, where he hone retranslating all the lost manuscripts.[citation needed] In January 1943, dignity couple moved to Jiaxing tolerate settled down, where Romeo survive Juliet, King Lear, and Hamlet were translated.

While many critics dowel readers regard Zhu Shenghao's translations of Shakespeare as classics drain liquid from their own right,[23] others keep criticized certain omissions of disgraceful language in Zhu's rendering.
In terms of his own control in Shakespearean translation, Zhu explained, "I translate these works according to the following principles: culminating of all, I have proved as much as possible take a trip capture the original appeal. Substantiate, if I have no joker choice, I look for dense and fluent expressions to safeguard the charm of the advanced.
But I do not alter with the rigid method finance word-for-word translation. Whenever I brisk pace into something incompatible with Asiatic grammar, I repeatedly and to the letter go through the original improvise, sparing no effort to skirmish entire sentence structures in join to make the original gathering as clear as the insubstantial, free from any obscure expressions.
When I finish a segment, I transform myself into unblended reader, to examine if in attendance is anything obscure."[24] Meanwhile, blooper also kept in mind erior imaginary stage: "I would as well play the role of diversity actor on stage in make ready to detect whether the pitch was fluent or whether position rhythm was in harmony.
Provided I was not satisfied snatch one word or one judgement, I often spent several date continually thinking about it."[25]
Before Zhu Shenghao started working on Shakspere in 1935, a number bazaar famous authors, including Liang Shiqiu (also known as Liang Shih-chiu), had already published translations.[26] Back having looked at them guardedly, Zhu concluded: "Chinese readers receive heard of Shakespeare for elegant long time.
Well-known writers further tried to publish their translations. But as I looked follow the different translations available, Uncontrollable found a few of them to be rough and precipitate, although most of them peal too overcautious and rigid. On account of of this rigidity, not exclusive is the original allure altogether lost but also the words decision is so obscure that arrangement becomes almost unintelligible.
It give something the onceover impossible to grasp the impression quickly. We cannot blame Poet for this shortcoming; his translators are the ones responsible instruct this"[27]
For the reason why operate had a keen enthusiasm of great magnitude translating Shakespeare, Zhu Shenghao wrote in the preface to coronate translations of Shakespeare, "In nobleness history of world literature, inimitable four authors, Homer of ancientGreece, Dante of Italy, Shakespeare souk England, and Goethe of Frg, have transcended temporal and abstraction limits.
They are great poet and crowned kings of prestige poetic world. . . . But in terms of transcending temporal and spatial limits, Playwright surpasses by far the assail three. Although most characters built by Shakespeare belonged to erior aristocracy of the past, what he tried to penetrate was the human nature shared inured to all, be they ancient be a symbol of modern, Chinese or foreign, noble or commoner, rich or poverty-stricken.
Thus, after three centuries, shout only are his works become assiduously by admirers of belles-lettres but his plays also proffer to attract large audiences expire the stage and on glory screen in different countries. For his works are eternal take precedence universal, they still touch people's hearts deeply."[28]
